PROVO, Utah — Winning seven of the 13 events on Friday evening, the Cougar swimmers and divers prevailed over the University of Denver in a back-and-forth meet, 129-114. As a team, the Cougars suffered a combined loss to the Pioneers with a final score of 274-212. 

In the first event of the day for the men, a senior-led team of Diego Camacho, Josue Dominguez, Brad Prolo, and Brigham Harrison won the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:29.82. Andrew Eliason, William Bonnett, Tony Puertas, and Abraham Zimmerman also delivered a solid time of 1:30.71, placing second for the Cougars. 

After losing the following 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, the senior Harrison narrowly missed a personal best, swimming a 20.32 in the 50-yard freestyle to get the Cougars back on track. Zimmerman also posted a 21.11 to come in third. 

In the 100-yard butterfly, the senior Prolo also contributed to the Cougar's success, posting a 49.36 to win the event. Puertas swam a 50.25 in the event as well, coming in third place. 

Harrison followed up his strong performance in the 50-yard freestyle with a 45.31 in the 100-yard freestyle to win the event for the Cougars. Emerson Edwards also went on to place third in the event, swimming a 46.45. 

For the third-straight event the Cougars were victorious, as Camacho swam a 50.50 in the 100-yard backstroke. 

The men closed out the day's events strong, winning the final two contests in the 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard freestyle relay. Dominguez placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.98, with Evan VanderSluis coming in third posting a 55.25. A team of Harrison, Zimmerman, Edwards and Camacho won the final event of the day in the 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming a 3:01.34. 

For the divers, Chase Hindmarsh and Mickey Strauss led the way in the 1-meter dive, scoring a 292.43 and 290.48 respectively. Strauss also posted the highest score for the Cougars in the 3-meter dive, recording a 317.33. 

The men's swim and dive teams will next compete in the Air Force Invite on Jan. 20 and 21. Times for the events will be posted in the days leading up to the events, as well as information on how to follow the events live.

PROVO, Utah — The BYU swim and dive teams will face Denver in their first meet of the new year on Friday, Jan. 6, at the Ritchie Center in Denver, Colorado. 

After strong team performances in the Utah Tech Invite and Mizzou Invite in November, the Denver Duel marks the first opportunity for the teams to officially compete in over a month. A win over the Pioneers would give the BYU men's swim and dive teams their fourth head-to-head win of the season, and the women's teams their third. Final results of Friday's events will be posted at the meet's conclusion on byucougars.com. 

Last Time Out

The last time the swim and dive teams were in action was over a month ago, as two separate combinations of teams competed in the Utah Tech Invite in St. George, Utah and the Mizzou Invite in Columbia, Missouri. The Cougars performed well in both events, as numerous individual and school records were sent by individual swimmers. At the Mizzou Invite, BYU ultimately placed second in a competitive field full of power 5 teams. 

Series Matchups

The previous meeting with Denver came at the beginning of 2020, as both the men and women teams suffered a loss at the Richards Building Pool. 

Meet Information

The meet will officially begin Friday, Jan. 6 at 2:30 p.m., beginning with the men's and women's dive competitions. Following  the dive teams and Denver's senior recognition, the swim meet will begin at 5 p.m.
