Challenging Field tests Cougars in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -- In a tournament field stacked with 11 ranked teams, including five in the top 10, the BYU men’s golf team tied for 14th place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, finishing the event +21 (295-288-290—873) after going 6-over-par in Saturday’s final round. No. 3 Washington won the title at -13.

BYU freshman Zac Blair continued his impressive inaugural campaign by leading the Cougars at +1 overall for the tournament, tying for 30th place. He was two strokes over par on Saturday after opening the event at -2 and then going 1-over-par in the second round.

The Cougars’ two seniors fared well over the final 18 holes as both Robbie Fillmore and Brady Johnson were just one stroke over par in the third round. Each golfer posted four birdies. Fillmore finished the tournament at 4 strokes over par to tie for 45th while Johnson was +8 overall, tying for 64th.

Junior Esteban Calisto rebounded from a tough day on Friday to go +2 on Saturday with six birdies in an up-and-down round. His overall score of +19 placed him 83rd. Cougar sophomore Jordan Rodgers completed the pack on Saturday, going +4 in the final round to finish the tournament at +10, good enough for 73rd place.

BYU will next be in action April 23-24 hosting the PING Cougar Classic at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.
