PROVO -- The No. 1 BYU women's cross country team and No. 28 men's team each finished second at the Triple Crown Invitational Saturday evening. Stanford, ranked No. 2 in both men's and women's polls, took both team titles from the Cougars.

The Cougar women, led by Sharolyn Shields (17:01.7), Laura Heiner (17:02.8), Elizabeth Jackson, (17:05.0) and Kara Ormond (17:12.3), were edged out by Stanford 31-33. Georgetown (64) finished third, followed by No. 7 Georgetown (64), No. 14 William and Mary (114), No. 21 Weber State (142) and Idaho State (147).

The Cardinal took the top two spots ahead of BYU's four-woman pack that finished third through sixth. Rounding out the scoring for the Cougars was freshman Sarah Ellett, the reigning Utah high school state champion, who finished in 15th place (17:37.3).

"It was everything we had hoped it would be and more, except for the fact that we didn't win," said Coach Patrick Shane. "It was a good match-up that showed that we aren't far off from where we need to be. The important thing, though, is that we are in shape for November, not September."

The BYU men staked an early claim to a spot in the top 25, as they edged out No. 19 Weber State 62-64 to claim second place on the men's side. No. 2 Stanford ran away with the team victory, finishing with an impressive score of 16 points. Idaho State finished in fourth with 98 points.

Despite Stanford's heavily talented squad, the Cougars kept it close through the first two miles of the four-mile course. Senior Matt Poulsen led the pack through the first mile before suffering a crippling asthma attack midway through the race. BYU's John Hedengren was the first runner to cross the two-mile mark before leading the team into the finish line in ninth place overall in a time of 20:06.1.

Hedengren led a tight, three-man Cougar pack that included Dula Parkinson in 10th place (20:07.7) and Randon Richards in 11th (20:08.0). Rounding out the scoring for BYU were Mark Lawson (16th) and Trevor Pettingill (18th).

"For the first meet, I felt really good about it," said Coach Sherald James. "Considering the limited number of practices that we've had, I feel we're coming along well. We will improve tremendously."
