BYU Sweeps Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships

PROVO -- The BYU men's and women's cross country teams captured their fourth straight Mountain West Conference Championships Friday at the East Bay Golf Course in Provo, Utah. The 10th ranked BYU men's team finished with 37 points, edging out 14th ranked Colorado State (42) by five points. The BYU women's team, ranked first in the nation, finished with a perfect score of 15 and were followed by 29th ranked Colorado State, with 63 points.

Kip Kangogo won the men's 8K race in a time of 24:16.8. He was followed by Austin Vigil (24:37.9) of Colorado State, Cameron Clarke (24:40.7) of New Mexico and Matt Adams (24:43.2) of BYU.

Kangogo commented, "I was trying to run at a constant pace. I just wanted to be steady." Kangogo was named men's cross country athlete of the year and BYU Men's Head Coach Ed Eyestone was named coach of the year.

For the women, Kassi Andersen of BYU finished first on the 6K course with a time of 20:55.2. She was followed by BYU runners Michaela Mannova (20:56.6), Katie Martin (21:06.2), Jaime Cottle (21:28.9) and Nan Kennard (21:32.2). Jessica Zarndt from UNLV was the first non-BYU finisher, with a seventh-place finish (21:42.6).

BYU Women's Head Coach Patrick Shane said, "I am really pleased with how we did. We had a great race today."

Andersen said, "Our strategy was to run as a team. Our whole goal was to work together and stay in a pack." Andersen was named the Mountain West Conference women's cross country athlete of the year and freshman of the year. It is the first time in the history of the conference that the same athlete won both honors. Coach Shane was named coach of the year.

Shane remarked, "Andersen is a great athlete and a very good runner. Great athletes make good coaches and not the other way around."

PROVO -- BYU men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, in Provo, Utah, at East Bay Golf Course. Both teams come into the meet as defending champions and bot h are favored to win again this year.

The men's team is ranked 10th in the nation and is coming off a third place finish at Pre-Nationals Oct. 19, 2002. The men's team is led by Kip Kangogo, who has placed first in every race this season.

The women's t eam is ranked first in the nation and has dominated every race this year. Most recently, they placed first at Pre-Nationals. The team is anchored by three All-Americans, Michaela Mannova, Jessie Kindschi and Nan Kennard.

The women run the 6K race at 3:30 p.m. and the men run the 8K race at 4:15 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow the meet at 5 p.m. Give-aways, including T-shirts and football tickets, will start at 3 p.m.

Tickets are not required to attend the MWC Cross Country Championships.

Directions to East Bay Golf Course if coming from Salt Lake City:

Take I-15 south to University Ave., exit number 266.

Turn left onto University Avenue.

Turn right onto East Bay Blvd.

Golf course is on the right.
