1985 BYU Hall of Fame
From 1969-73, Brenda Peterson performed double duty as captain of both BYU's women's volleyball team and women's basketball team. She led the former to three regional championships, and came in second at the AIAW Championships. She was the team's outstanding offensive player. During her years at BYU, the team had a combined perfect match record of 37-0.
In 1973, Brenda became the first female BYU athlete to become a member of a national team when she was selected to play on the United States women's volleyball team from 1973-76, participating in Moscow's University World Games in 1973. She was a member of the U.S. Volleyball Association Governing Board from 1974-76.
In basketball, Brenda led her team to two conference championships and two-second place finishes. Her senior year, Brenda was also a standout in several nonconference victories, the first year BYU competed outside the intermountain region.
As athletic scholarships for female athletes were not available during Brenda's years at the "Y," she made sure to excel in her education pursuits as much as in athletics, maintaining an academic scholarship with an overall GPA of 3.46. She received her B.A. in 1974 with a double major in English and French, and then received an M.S. in health science and technical writing in 1979, both from BYU.
