Cougars Take Top Spots in Day Three

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – During the third day in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference championships, both the men and women’s teams advanced to the first place position.

Friday’s competition began with the 400 IM, where Alia Welsh finished sixth with a time of 4:22.44 in the women’s heat. For the men, Rafael Alfaro touched in at 3:54.65 for the fourth place finish.

In the 100 fly, Melissa Manser finished fifth with her time of 56.00. David Armstrong achieved a first-place finish for the men with his time of 47.86,while Jordan Fletcher achieved seventh place with a time of 49.15 for the men’s heat.

Garret Beaman made a good showing in the men’s heat of the 200 free, recording a time of 1:37.96 that put him at fourth place.

With a time of 55.00, Brady Wells took third place in the 100 breaststroke.

Hailey Campbell and Candice Smith accomplished a 1, 2 sweep in the 100 back with Campbell earning first place at 53.47 and Smith in second with 55.27.

The women’s 200 free relay team of Taryn Toolson, Andrea Grant, Angela Bennion and Campbell finished at second place with a time of 1:33.24.

In the men’s heat, the team of Fletcher, Ryan Krause, David Armstrong and Beaman finished in fifth place with a team of 1:21.18.

In Colorado, Dayna Christensen took the title for the women's 1-meter diving competition with her final score of 275.70. Syrena Miskin and Raleigh Williams took second and third right behind her with their scores of 269.45 and 268.95, respectively.

Brandon Watson claimed another first place title on the boards, scoring at final of 445.90 on the 3-meter. Kevin Dreesen took third place with his score of 360.75, while Matt Denkers finished at fifth place with 336.30.  

After the day’s events, the team advanced in points which put the men in first overall at 428 points and the women in first as well with 490.50.
