Women Voted to Dominate Conference
PROVO -- After a voting throughout the Mountain West Conference swim and dive head coaches, the BYU women’s team was picked to take the 2010-11 Mountain West Conference regular-season title while the men’s team was picked to take second.
“The goal for both of our teams is to take home the conference championship,” said BYU head coach Tim Powers. “We’ve got a lot of promising new comers this year that will be able to perform for us and hopefully make that goal a reality.”
Last year, the BYU women’s swim and dive team finished the season with a perfect 11-0 overall record and 8-0 in the Mountain West Conference. They also earned their fourth-straight MWC championship and ninth in 11 years. The men’s team placed third in the conference.
The UNLV men’s team was favored to take first in the conference with a total of 25 votes, BYU in second with 18 votes, Air Force with 17 votes, Wyoming with 16, Utah with eight and TCU with six.
The BYU women’s team totaled 62 votes and San Diego State came in second with 56, Wyoming with 50, UNLV with 45, Colorado State and Utah with 33, TCU with 22, New Mexico with 13 and Air Force with 10.
The swim and dive season kicks off for the Cougars on Oct. 7 with a meet featuring the freshmen and sophomores of BYU and Utah. The meet will be followed by the annual Blue and White Alumni meet on Oct. 8. Both events will take place in the Richards Building pool at 6 p.m.
