Women Swimmers Face Off with TCU and SDSU

PROVO -- After a lay-off of over a month from competitive action, the BYU women's swim and dive team jumps back in the pool this week as they take on TCU on Thursday and San Diego State on Saturday in the Richards Building Pool. Action begins on Thursday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

"It's time to compete again," BYU coach Stan Crump said. "It's time to get some races under our belt. This will be a really good stretch for us. Now is when we start to build up to the conference championships."

The two Cougar meets this week start a stretch of six Mountain West Conference dual meets over the next three weeks followed by the MWC Championships on Feb. 27.

The Horned Frogs come to town with a 1-4 MWC record (4-5 overall) after falling last weekend to SDSU by 40 points. Although BYU beat TCU last season in Texas, the last time the Horned Frogs visited Provo they came out on top of the Cougars 134-109.

BYU is looking for strong performances from senior captains Angela Goodson-Price and Angela Nelson. Two-time All-American Goodson-Price hopes to get back on track in the butterfly. She has recorded the Cougars' season-best time in the 100 fly with a time of 57.44. Senior diver Nelson currently has the team's best 3-meter board score.

SDSU is currently 5-3 overall (MWC 2-3) and the Aztecs are coming off of a victory over Boise State and a lose to Colorado State on Wednesday of this week before they travel to take on the Cougars. The Aztecs are led by junior freestyle distance swimmer Rosalie Raymond, who has recorded season-best times in both the 500 (5:10.78) and 1000 (10:37.49) free.

The BYU women are coming off of their Christmas training in Puerto Rico. The Cougars were in the Caribbean from Dec. 27-Jan. 6 preparing for the remainder of their season. Although BYU has not competed for over a month and its two opponents this week have competed within the last seven days, Coach Crump feels comfortable with facing TCU and SDSU.

"Our Christmas training was very productive," Crump said. "Our team worked very hard in Puerto Rico and hopefully it won't take long for us to get back to competition form."
