Cougars Lead After First Day of BYU Invite

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women's swim team took the lead against Dixie State, Liberty and UC Davis after the first day of the BYU Invitational on Friday. 

"The divers did an amazing job today and our swimmers had some really solid races," BYU head coach John Brooks said. "A lot of teams swim faster the second day, so we need to make sure we are ready to go for tomorrow. Overall, we had a great team effort today and are excited for tomorrow."

Day 1 Results

The Cougars stayed ahead the first day as they scored 173-26 against Dixie, 121-84 against Liberty and 151-54 against UC Davis. 

A winning team of Brynn Sproul, Lily Plaudis, Katie Smith and Gwen Gustafson kicked off the meet with a pool record time of 1:42.87 in the 200-yard medley relay. Gustafson broke her own pool record with a 50-yard freestyle first-place finish of 23.19. 

Plaudis gained another win for BYU in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching at 1:04.05. Teammate Jessica LeSueur broke another facility record, swimming a 10:30.44 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Mariah Lindsay contributed her own individual win to the competition with a 57.96 in the 100-yard individual medley.

The divers dominated the board in the 3-meter event with Morgan Paul taking first, Summer Westover securing second, Kennedy Cribbs landing third and Morgan Mellow-Dopp snatching fourth. Cribbs stole the win in the 1-meter with a score of 271.05.

BYU will continue competition against the three universities Saturday morning at 11 a.m. MST.
