Marquette defeats Princeton to advance

PROVO, Utah-In the Second Round of the NCAA tournament, No. 4 seed Marquette defeated Princeton 3-1 at South Field on Thursday to earn its third appearance in the Sweet Sixteen in program history.

Marquette improves its record to 18-2-2, while Princeton ends its season with a 14-4-1 overall record.

Marquette controlled the offensive side of the ball early in the first half, but Princeton made a push seven minutes in to earn two-straight corner kicks. The Tigers stayed aggressive and 11 minutes in Lauren Lazo dribbled into the box and sunk a shot to the far side of the net for her 11th goal of the season to put Princeton up 1-0.

Marquette took offensive control after the Princeton score and answered 47 seconds before the end of the half to tie the game at 1-1. The goal came when Mady Vicker followed through on a shot rebound from teammate Cara Jacobson.

The Golden Eagles started where they left off in the second half and at 53:10 Taylor Madigan found the back of the net on an assist from Maegan Kelly to put Marquette up 2-1. Marquette padded its lead with 7:42 left when Ally Miller guided a pass from Maegan Kelly into the net for her seventh goal of the season.

Marquette grabbed the 3-1 win and will play the winner of BYU and Auburn on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST on South Field.
