WCC action kicks off on Friday at home
PROVO, Utah – The No. 6/4 BYU women’s soccer team kicks off West Coast Conference play this weekend against No. 21 Santa Clara with a game on Friday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. MT.
The Cougars boast an impressive 11-1 season record and are currently on a nine-game winning streak. BYU went undefeated (8-0) through the month of September for the first time since the 1997 season when the team went 9-0.
Three players on the BYU squad have recorded a team-high five goals on the year. Jaiden Thornock, Michele Murphy and Jessica Ringwood’s five apiece contribute to a team total of 26 goals.
BYU is out scoring its opponents 26-6 through its first 12 games.
Thornock also leads the squad in the shot category with 40 shots total.
Goalkeeper Erica Owens has recorded 1,031 minutes in front of the net, made 37 saves and already recorded six shutouts.
Opponent
The No. 21 Santa Clara women’s soccer team comes to Provo with 7-2-3 record and on a six-game unbeaten streak.
Senior Lauren Matheson leads the Broncos with four goals and teammate Sofia Huerta also leads the team with 44 shots.
Seven other players have recorded double-figure shots this year and all but one player on Santa Clara’s roster has taken at least one shot this season.
Santa Clara was chosen first in this season’s WCC Preseason Poll and was ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll.
Returning starters Julie Johnston and Sofia Huerta played at the U-20 National championships earlier this season. Since returning, the team has gone 4-0. Johnston had nine goals in 2011 and Huerta had eight.
