PROVO, Utah - The No. 17/8 BYU women’s soccer team beat the Washington Huskies 3-1 on South Field to complete their homestand undefeated at 6-0. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-1 on the season and handed the Huskies their first loss of 2012.

“We played a great game,” head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “Washington is a good team and didn’t give us many good looks. I thought we moved the ball well and this was a great team performance.”

The Cougars scored the only goal of the first half after just 12 minutes when Lindsi Lisonbee Cutshall sent in a ball from 40 yards out and Jaiden Thornock finished it off with a header into the back of the net. That goal was her fifth of the season.

Hermann Trophy Watch List senior Cutshall and the defense held the Huskies without a shot in the first half marking the first time that the Cougars have held an opponent to zero shots in the first half all season. Senior Jessica Ringwood and sophomore Thorncock each tallied two shots to help the Cougars to tally nine shots in the half.

The second half was a back and forth battle with neither team making a push until the 75th minute when Thornock centered the ball and her pass deflected off of a Husky player into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

With eight minutes left in the half, Washington got on the board with a goal by Isabel Farrell.

One minute later, the Cougars answered to extend the lead back to two on a goal by Ringwood. The goal was her fourth of the season and was assisted by both freshman Michele Murphy and senior Carlee Payne Holmoe

“We've had a lot of great momentum and energy at home,” Rockwood said. “Now we just need to prove that we can keep it up on the road.”

Up next is a game against in-state foe Utah State on Thursday Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. MDT in Logan. BYU Radio will broadcast the game live online and on satellite radio.
