SPOKANE, Wash.--The BYU women’s soccer team (8-4-3, 2-1-1) finished its week on the road with a 3-2 victory over Gonzaga (7-6-2, 0-2-2) on Saturday and, with six saves in front of the net, senior goalkeeper McKinzie Olson became BYU's all-time career saves leader.
To-date, Olson has recorded a total of 265 career saves to pass the previous record of 261 set by Erika Woodbury in 2007.
In the first half, both teams were unable to finish in the final third with the Cougars posting 12 shots on goal against the Bulldogs’ four.
Coming out strong in the second, Gonzaga was first to put points on the board off a goal from Kasey Ruboksy in the 48th minute.
The Cougars answered that goal with two of their own, the first coming from Lauren Crosby on a shot over the keeper in the upper left corner. Kyleigh Royall, coming off the bench for the Cougars, scored the second goal off a cross into the box from Carlee Payne.
In the 81st minute a Gonzaga defender, attempting to clear the ball, scored an own goal and put the Cougars up 3-1.
Refusing to give up, Gonzaga’s Cricket Harber finished a short shot among confusion in the 18-yard box with two minutes left, bringing the Bulldogs within one, but that is as close as they would get.
