PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s soccer team fought through 71 scoreless minutes before defender Lindsi Lisonbee found the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 victory over the Aggies of Utah State, Thursday, at South Field.

“There was a lot of pressure for us at the beginning of the season and it definitely wears on you a bit so this week we wanted to find our confidence and alleviate some of the pressure for the players,” said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “We made an adjustment in our formation and we really like it. It’s something different that we’ve never done before and the girls have really responded well to it so we're excited now about starting our conference play."

Lisonbee headed the ball into the goal off a corner kick from Jessica Ringwood in the second half. BYU took two corners on the night. The first half proved to be a defensive battle as neither team could find the back of the net, although the Cougars controlled the ball much of the time.

“Everytime I go up for a corner I hear my teammates cheering for me so I just owe it to them,” Lisonbee said. “They have a lot of confidence in me and believe in me, and it was time to put one in.”

The Cougars are now 5-3-2 on the season. Senior goalkeeper McKinzie Olsen recorded her second shut out of the season and the 33rd of her career.

Due to intense defensive pressure, neither team had many shots on goal. Jennifer Flynn, Kersey Davis and Lauren Roundy each took a shot for the Aggies. Jessica Ringwood led the Cougars with three shot attempts.

To open conference play in the inaugural season with the West Coast Conference, the Cougars will host the University of Portland Pilots on Oct. 6th at South Field.

Coach Rockwood:

“Lindsi is a big time player for us. She is a great leader on the field, we rely so much on her defensively but we also know on set pieces she can come up and score for us at any time, and she came through today with a fantastic goal.”

On starting conference play:

“It’s something we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. The conference has done very well during the preseason. All the teams are performing at a high level. We look forward to opening at home. It’s always good to play at home.”
