Cougars Fall In Overtime At #2 Oklahoma State
STILLWATER, Okla. – In one of its toughest matchups of the season, the BYU women’s soccer team took No. 2 Oklahoma State into overtime before falling 1-2 on the road, Thursday.
A goal from BYU (4-2-2) freshman Jaiden Thornock in the 86th minute evened the score at one-all to force the game into overtime. The goal was Thornock’s second of the season.
With the loss, the Cougars are now 0-1-1 this season against teams ranked in the Top-25.
Oklahoma State controlled much of the first half but weren’t allowed a goal by BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson until the last four minutes before halftime. Elizabeth DeLozier headed in her third goal of the season to put the Cowgirls on the board first. Olson tabbed four saves in the first half, seven in the game.
Back from the break and down a goal, the Cougars came out strong in the second half. They out-shot the Cowgirls 9-5 and the goal from Thornock sent the game into BYU’s third overtime game this season.
In a “golden goal” scenario, the Cowgirls and Cougars looked to get on the board first for the win but it was Oklahoma State in the end that got the victory. A goal from Colleen Dougherty, her first of the season, off a corner kick was the gamewinner in the 99th minute.
BYU took 15 shots on the night to Oklahoma State’s 16.
Up next for the Cougars is a game at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. CT.
