Lisonbee Scores in Non-Conference Loss
SANTA CLARA -- In a match-up between two Top-25 schools, the No. 16 BYU women's soccer team (14-3-2, 4-1-1) fell 2-1 on a late goal to the No. 11 Santa Clara Broncos.
"I thought we came out here prepared and the girls battled very hard but we're disappointed with the loss," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Santa Clara is a very good team and they played well tonight."
Sophomore defender Lindsi Lisonbee netted her fourth goal of the season in the 22nd minute of action to tie the score before halftime.
At the beginning of the game, the Broncos' Kendra Perry came out fast to put away the first score of the game in under one minute of play.
"I thought we played really well tonight but you just can't give up a goal in the first minute and unfortunately we did," Rockwood said. "Other than that we really did play solid in the first half and got our goal. We also had some good looks in the second half but we just need to work on getting the job done when it's our time."
The Cougars held their ground in the first half and much of the second, keeping the ball in Bronco territory and forcing numerous attacks on offense. Both teams played tough back-and-forth soccer and basically took turns taking shots on goal.
BYU ended with nine shots to Santa Clara's 13. Jessica Ringwood and Carlee Payne led the Cougars with two shots apiece. Amanda Poach had a game-high four shots.
The Cougars will next play this Saturday against instate rival Utah in Salt Lake at 7 p.m. as part of the Deseret First Duel. The winner of the game receives six points towards their respective school's point total.
