Tough First Loss of Season for No. 9 BYU
AUSTIN -- Despite holding the No. 20 Texas Longhorns (6-1-1) to just six shots on the night, where they'd previously averaged 15 per game, the BYU women's soccer team (7-1-1) suffered a tough 1-0 loss to the home team.
"We came out strong against a tough opponent," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "And obviously it's tough to lose but the girls really battled hard tonight. We weren't as sharp as we needed to be against a great opponent but we'll have plenty of time to improve before our next game."
Forwards Carlee Payne and Jennie Marshall led the Cougars with two shots apiece with teammates Lindsi Lisonbee and Jessica Ringwood contributing one shot each.
Under wet and muggy conditions, BYU and Texas tied with six shots each on the night. The Longhorns have previously averaged 15 shots per game this season. The Cougars have now held all their 2010 opponents, but one, to single-digit shot performances.
Longhorn Leah Fortune snuck in the first goal of the game after just two minutes of action to give Texas the lead in the first half.
The Cougars came back from a 0-4 shot deficit to getting three straight shots on goal and putting the count at 3-4 before the teams left the field for halftime with the last shot of the half coming from BYU's Payne.
Texas has averaged seven shots per game in the first half of play this season but the Cougar defense kept them to just four in the evening's match-up.
The Longhorns have met three Top-25 teams this season with a 2-1-0 record against them. BYU is the fourth Top-25 team to compete against the Longhorns.
Up next for the No. 9 Cougars is another game on the road against in-state rival Utah State on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m.
