Cougars Move Up In Rankings

PROVO -- After its undefeated 6-0-1 start to the 2010 season, the BYU women's soccer team moved up to No. 9 in the Soccer America poll released Monday and also posted one of the top attendance records in the nation.

So far this season the Cougars have recorded a 4-0-1 record at home, a perfect 2-0 record on the road and two wins over Top-25 ranked teams.

Junior Jennie Marshall's six goals leads the team's 17-goal total for the season. Senior Kassidy Shumway adds three goals to that team total.

In their five home games, the Cougars are averaging 2,556 fans per game in the 2010 season with their home attendance the second highest in the Soccer America poll. Only No. 3 Portland is recording a higher overall home attendance than BYU.

In the Soccer America poll, only two of the schools ranked higher than the Cougars are also recording a higher home, and away, attendance. No. 1 North Carolina, in seven games, has played in front of a total of 17,329 fans and No. 3 Portland, in eight games, has played in front of 18,025. No. 9 BYU, in seven games, has seen a total of 13,448 fans.

This weekend, the Cougars will travel to Texas to take on the Rice Owls and Texas Longhorns. They'll play Saturday at 4 p.m. CT against the Owls and Monday at 4 p.m. CT against the Longhorns before their next home game on Sept. 29 against Idaho State.
