Cougars in Blue Win Annual Blue and White Game
PROVO -- BYU women's soccer opened their preseason play with a blue and white inner-squad scrimmage on Thursday at South Field with the players in blue coming out with a 4-0 victory.
Senior Kassidy Shumway led the blue squad with two goals while teammates Carlee Payne and Jennie Marshall each added one of their own.
"It's really important that the girls have this time together to play as a team and for them to get to know each other, and for the coaching staff to be able to evaluate each individual player," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood.
The team played four 20-minute quarters, giving all the players an opportunity to play. Junior goalkeeper McKinzie Olson, who was named to the 2009 All-Conference First team, saw action in the goal with sophomore Erica Owens and freshman Katherine Snyder also getting time in front of the net.
Shumway's first and second goals came in the first and second quarters, respectively, with Payne and Marshall scoring in the final quarter of the evening.
"I'm very excited for the beginning of this season and what we're looking forward to accomplishing this year," Rockwood said.
Up next for the Cougars is an exhibition game on Saturday, August 14, to feature a match-up between the 2010 squad and some of BYU's alumni. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
