PROVO -- With fall workouts in full stride, the BYU women’s soccer team is ready to begin their 2010 season with a blue and white scrimmage on Thursday, August 12, and an exhibition on Saturday, August 14, to feature soccer team alumni. Both games are free entry, set for a 7 p.m. start and will be played on South Field in Provo.

“I am always excited for any season to start,” said senior forward Kassidy Shumway. “Playing in games, for this school, and at home is an unforgettable feeling. I am looking forward to being responsible as a leader and a player this season. I love playing soccer and want to make my last year as fun as I can.”

Shumway is one of five seniors on this year’s squad.

"I am extremely excited for season this year," said senior defender Nicole Gilliam. "When we had our first practice it was great to see everyone working hard and giving their best efforts. Our team has a strong work ethic and we are able to posses the ball very well. Our whole team plays high pressure and defense, which most opponents are not used to, and I think it throws them off their rhythm a bit."

The team began two-a-day practices almost one week ago and have been working hard in preparation for their upcoming season.

"Two-a-days are definitely more helpful than just one practice a day," Shumway said. "Being able to play with each other more often helps us prepare for the season. Our overall talent as a team will definitely be our strength this year. We have a lot of players coming back and we love playing with each other."

Come see the Cougars in action this week. After their two home games, the team will begin their pre-season play with a trip to California for games against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton the following weekend.

"What I love most about the season is when our games finally start," Gilliam said. "I am really looking forward to seeing all of our fans at our home games and I am very excited to have my parents be able to travel to most of the away games. Stepping onto the game field is an awesome feeling!"
