No. 19 BYU Upset No. 9 West Virginia at Penn State Invitational
University Park, PA -- Freshman Carlee Payne’s unassisted goal in the 97th minute gave the No. 19 ranked Cougars the upset win over No. 9 West Virginia, Monday.
“We knew this weekend was a great opportunity for our program to compete against some of the prominent programs in the country,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “I was very impressed with our players’ intensity and preparation for the West Virginia game. We came out with a lot of energy and intensity and were rewarded with a goal in overtime. Carlee had a remarkable weekend with 2 game-winning goals.”
The Cougars went undefeated in the Penn State Invitational capturing wins over No. 9 West Virginia and No. 20 UConn. BYU’s win over West Virginia came the day after the Mountaineers upset No. 5 Penn State.
No. 19 BYU controlled the first 20-25 minutes of the contest, finishing the half with eight shots and three corner kicks while West Virginia had seven shots and did not take a corner kicks in the first period.
“A major component in our team’s success this weekend was the performance and effort of the players coming off the bench,” Rockwood said. “They allowed us to maintain our high pressure and create several scoring opportunities.”
After 90 minutes of regulation, the game ended in a 0-0 tie and would head into two 10-minute sudden death overtimes.
Seven minutes into the first over time of the game, Payne dribbled the ball down the field and took the shot just inside the 18 to put it right past the hands of the West Virginia goalie.
This is Payne’s second game in a row to score the game-winning goal and give the Cougars their second win over a Top-25 team. Payne is one of four freshman that started in BYU’s win over West Virginia including Lindsi Lisonbee, Jessica Ringwood and Stacy Bartholomew.
The Cougars out-shot the Mountaineers 6-5 on goal and took seven cornerkicks in the game compared to West Virginia’s four.
Sophomore goalie McKinzie Olson captured her second consecutive shut-out of the year in BYU’s win over West Virginia. Olson played all 90 minutes against Connecticut and all 97 minutes against West Virginia.
“I was proud of our team defense,” Rockwood said. “West Virginia is a very talented and dangerous attacking team. Our back four held strong and showed great composure. McKinzie had another solid performance in goal and was a factor in our team’s ability to keep the shutout.”
The Cougar defense, led by Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate and two-time All-American Andrea Willis, only allowed the Mountaineers five shots on goal.
Up next for the Cougars is a home match-up against William & Mary on Friday and No. 15 Oklahoma State on Monday at South Field.
