Cowgirls last test for Cougars

PROVO -- After wrapping up the Mountain West Conference Regular Season Championship and going a perfect 8-0 at home, the Cougars head to Wyoming to face the Cowgirls in Laramie for the last game of the 2008 regular season, Saturday, November 1 at 11:00 a.m.

Riding an eight-game winning streak, the longest of the season, BYU has outscored their last 13 opponents 19-4. Ten of the twelve wins have come as shutouts, including the last two games. Three-time All-American senior forward Katie Larkin leads the team with eight goals and freshman forward Lauren Anderson has nine assists and four goals. Sophomore forward Kassidy Christensen is second on the team with five goals, and senior midfielder Katie Fellows Hodgkiss has four. Behind the defense, freshman goal-keeper McKinzie Olson has lowered her season goals-against-average to 0.60 in 2008, and has only allowed one goal in the last seven games.

Wyoming is currently 8-9-1 (2-4-0, MWC) and in eighth place in the MWC. The Cowgirls have just come off of two league losses to San Diego State (0-4) and Utah (0-1). Senior midfielder Amanda Lathrop leads the team with eight goals and eight assists, and junior midfielder Emily Layton has six goals. The Cowgirls have outscored their opponents 23-21, and outshot them 276-199. Senior goalkeeper Jamie Scarcliff has allowed 19 goals on the season, and has a 1.05 goals-against-average.

The 2008 MWC Women’s Soccer Tournament will be held in Las Vegas from Wednesday, Nov. 5 to Saturday, Nov. 8. The championship game will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Entering the tournament as the number one seed, the Cougars will see their first action on Thursday, Nov. 6.

BYU is the reigning conference tournament champion, defeating UNLV 2-0 in the 2007 championship game to claim the title and the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

NCAA play begins at various locations around the country on Thursday, Nov. 13. Locations, dates and times for each team will be announced Monday, Nov. 13, following the completion of conference tournament play.
