FORT WORTH -- Despite coming in the 80th minute of the game, sophomore forward Kassidy Christensen’s goal past the sliding TCU keeper was good enough to give the Cougars the 1-0 win over the Horned Frogs on Thursday afternoon.

“It was quite an exciting game,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “The girls battled hard and did a great job. Today was all about effort, and the team came out and played hard.”

Both teams applied consistent pressure throughout the first half, with the Cougars outshooting the Horned Frogs 10-9. Freshman keeper McKinzie Olson made two saves in the first half, and the teams went into the break tied 0-0. Olson finished the game with eight saves.

“We had some opportunities in the first half that we weren’t able to take advantage of,” said Rockwood. “The team played with a lot of energy in the second half and Kassidy did a great job for us.”

Freshman forward Lauren Anderson again assisted Christensen’s goal for her team-leading eighth assist on the year. She slid the ball forward into the box and Christensen was able to control it and send the ball past the TCU keeper Kelsey Walters. Christensen now has five goals in 2008.

Christensen’s goal came while the Cougars were playing a man down. Junior midfielder Kelsea Kakadelas was given a red card and ejected during the 62nd minute after receiving her second yellow card in the game. BYU is 3-0 in 2008 while playing with only ten players after a teammate has been given a red card. Five cards were given in the game, with the Cougars receiving three and TCU two.

TCU outshot the Cougars 12-8, but the Cougars had five corner kicks the Horned Frogs’ three.

The Horned Frogs applied constant pressure throughout the game, especially the last ten minutes after Christensen’s goal, but defenders Jessica Carter and Andrea Willis were very solid and turned back each TCU attack.

“Willis and Carter, our whole back line played a tremendous game,” said Rockwood. “They really rose to the occasion. We knew TCU would be a tough place to come and play, and our defense really helped us out.”

The win moved BYU to 11-5-0 (4-0, MWC) and solidified their position in first place in the league. TCU dropped to 10-3-1 (2-2, MWC).

With the win, many streaks continued for the Cougars. The team has not allowed a goal in their last five games, and has not allowed a goal in MWC play. Their current winning streak stretches to five games, their best this season and best since they won five straight games from September 24 to October 11, 2007. BYU’s shutout streak is also extended to five straight games, the first time that has happened since the start of the 2007 season when the team did not allow a goal in eight games. The four game conference shutout streak is the first since 2005.

BYU now travels to Albuquerque to face the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 12:00 p.m. A live stat feed of the game will be available at www.byucougars.com/soccer_w/. The team will then be at home on Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host Air Force at 7:00 p.m. at South Field.

Cougar fans can join the official Women's Soccer texting group by texting the words "WSOC" to the number 83043. Members of the group will receive reminders about game times, information about ticket discounts and other promotions.
