PROVO -- A strong team effort and freshman Auna Janis' second-half goal helped BYU upset No. 19 Miami in Coral Gables, Fl., Tuesday, 1-0. The loss was the Hurricanes' first of the season.

"The team really wanted to bring the energy and excitement of playing at home with us on the road," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "They were anxious to prove themselves against a very good team and they came out strong."

Looking to start the game aggressively, BYU outshot Miami seven to six in the first half. Senior forward Katie Larkin, making her return to the team after missing two games with a broken wrist registered four shots in the first half. Each team had opportunities to score during the first 45 minutes, and the momentum swung back and forth.

The Cougars' goal came in the 68th minute when Janis was able to corral a ball crossed from the corner and put it past the Miami keeper. The goal was only the second goal allowed by Miami this season. Sophomore forward Becca Riddle and freshman forward Lauren Anderson assisted on the play. The assist was Anderson's team leading fifth of the season. The goal was Janis' second of the season.

Freshman keeper McKinzie Olson recorded her second straight shutout and had a save in the game. The shutout lowered her season goals-against-average to 1.09. The defense also helped shutdown a potent Miami attack.

"Our back four did a tremendous job," said Rockwood. "Karen Cook was able to shutdown their leading scorer and that really helped us."

With the win, BYU improves to 5-4-0, while Miami falls to 7-1-0.

BYU's next game is against Big Ten power Michigan State at South Field on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
