Cougars lose to Long Beach State 3-0
PROVO, Utah (Sept. 11, 2008) – Still working hard to find consistency on the road, the BYU women’s soccer team fell to Long Beach State 3-0 in Long Beach Thursday evening. “Long Beach is a very good team, and we didn’t get a good start today,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “We’ve had a lot of experiences these three road games that we need to learn from. We can play at a higher level than we have been, but we haven’t proven that yet.” Sophomore forward Kristen Kiefer started the scoring for the Beach in the 26th minute. Sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bullock and freshman midfielder Shawna Gordon scored in the second half for the final tally.
The team was without leader senior forward Katie Larkin, who broke her wrist in a hard fall in BYU’s 1-0 loss to Marquette over the weekend. Long Beach outshot the Cougars 14-3, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 12-3. “We rely on Katie, but the team needs to come together and execute on what we’ve been working on,” said Rockwood. “When we hold the ball we’re a good team. We need to improve on that.” Come support the Cougars at South Field when they take on the Bengals of Idaho State at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 13. Fans can get into the game for $1 by showing their ticket stubs from the BYU-UCLA football game, and students can get in for free by showing their student ID. Fans can join the official BYU Women’s Soccer Texting group by texting the word “WSOC” to 83043. Members of the group will get updates about game times and special promotions.
