PROVO -- Freshman forward Lauren Anderson continued her strong start to the season, recording the first goal of her Cougar career, but the BYU women’s soccer team lost a difficult match Thursday evening, losing to William and Mary 4-1 in Williamsburg.

“William and Mary did a great job,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “They are a solid team. It’s disappointing defensively to give up four goals again. We need to work on being ready to play when the whistle blows, and we need to work on playing on the road.”

The Cougars fell behind early when the ball bounced off sophomore keeper Aleena Shelton and rolled into the goal for an own goal in the 17th minute. Senior defender Dani Collins added the second Tribe goal at the 18:02 mark off a corner kick, and William and Mary took the 2-0 lead into the break.

Anderson found the back of the net and got the Cougars on the board when her shot from the top of the goal box bounced off and rolled into the goal. Kristi Dow-Jackson assisted her shot.

William and Mary added two goals in the second half. Kellie Jenkins and Claire Zimmeck both scored for the Tribe after the break.

The team now travels to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face off against Marquette University on Saturday. The game will kick off at 7:00 p.m. Live audio and stat feeds will be available by visiting www.byucougars.com/soccer_w/ and clicking on the ‘schedule’ page. A direct link to the live audio will be available on the soccer front page the day of the game.
