Woodbury Records 200th Save, BYU Ties
BOULDER -- Senior goalkeeper and BYU-career-saves-record-holder Erika Woodbury surpassed the 200-save mark with five saves on Saturday in a 0-0 tie on the road at No. 18 Colorado.
The Cougars outshot the Buffaloes 21-10 and controlled the ball most of the game. BYU has nearly doubled its opponents in both shots and shots on goal in all three of its games this season.
Woodbury broke the career saves record as a junior in 2006 and has yet to allow a goal in the Cougars' three games this season. Her career-saves total is now 202, which is 43 more saves than the next player on the list. Woodbury also set a season-shutout record in 2006 with 12.
"I'm just glad that the ball didn't go in the net tonight," Woodbury said. "Actually our forwards blocked a ball off the line tonight, and it?s really the defense that has kept other teams from scoring on us this year."
The last time BYU allowed zero goals in its first three games occurred in 2003 when the team did not allow a goal until its fifth game of the season. Other defensive anchors on the squad include last year's Mountain West Conference Co-Freshman of the Year Andrea Willis, and Provo native Jessica Harmon-Carter (Timpview HS), one of two Hermann Trophy Candidates the 2007 roster.
"Really, you have to give credit to our entire team defense," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Our defense always starts with the pressure our forwards provide. Today was a good result for us and we felt like we controlled a lot of the game. Colorado is very good defensively, as well, but both teams had some good opportunities to score."
Offensive standouts for the Cougars in Saturday's game included freshman Becca Riddle (Hillcrest HS) with five shots, and junior Katie Larkin (Alta HS) and sophomore Kelsea Kakadelas with four shots apiece.
BYU's next game will be the home opener Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. against Long Beach State. Cougar soccer fans set the attendance record at South Stadium last year, and BYU finished the year with the third largest average crowd in the nation.
