Fellows Strikes Back of Net
PROVO -- For the second game in a row, BYU sophomore Katie Fellows made the big play, this time giving the Cougars (8-1-1) a 1-0 victory over the University of Arizona (6-4-0) Monday evening at South Stadium. She also scored the game-tying goal on Friday against Washington State.
"Arizona is a very, very talented team," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "They are one of the best teams we've played all year. Their forwards are extremely talented and dangerous. I was proud of our team and the way we held our composure after we scored. We played smart tonight."
Fellows' goal came in the 72nd minute when Haylee Cuthbert sent the ball over to the right side of the field off a corner kick. Fellows sent a hard header toward the goal. The ball crossed the line and then bounced off two Wildcat defenders and hit the post while Arizona tried to clear the ball, but the goal had already been made.
"It's a whole game process," Fellows said. "You come ready to play every game and you have to play as if every ball is going to be the ball. I had an opportunity and I took it."
Despite a scoreless first half, BYU gave the crowd of 3,606 something to cheer about with several close calls, though neither team was able to convert.
Arizona's best looks came in the 17th and 20th minutes, respectively. The Wildcats' first opportunity came when Gianna DeSaverio fired a shot off to the bottom-left corner of the net. BYU keeper Erika Woodbury had to stretch out to make the diving save.
Three minutes later, DeSaverio again received the ball on a breakaway up the middle. She drew Woodbury out of the net, but Woodbury dove into DeSaverio to snatch the ball as the players collided. Both players took a few minutes to recover from the impact.
BYU then took its turn to give Arizona a few scares.
In the 32nd minute, Jessica Harmon sent a cross to the left side of the field to a waiting Brooke Bowman, who tapped the ball ahead of the last Arizona defender. Wildcat keeper Chelsea McIntyre barely made it to the ball before Bowman could score.
Eight minutes later, Jessica Aquino received the ball on a breakaway and drew McIntyre 22 yards out of the net. She lightly tapped the ball out of bounds. Aquino made a quick throw-in to Fellows who booted the ball toward the goal, beating McIntyre to the net. Amberlea Anderson jumped to head the ball in, but knocked down a Wildcat defender in the process, receiving a personal foul.
BYU outshot Arizona 14-6, including 11-2 in the second half. Natalie Nate and Katie Larkin led all players with three shots apiece. McIntyre made seven saves for the Wildcats.
The Cougars stay in Provo on Saturday, hosting San Francisco at 8 p.m.
