Cougs Settle for Tie
SEATTLE -- Despite a second-half comeback, No. 14 BYU (7-1-1) was only able to squeak out a 1-1 tie against Utah State (5-3-2) in the final round Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge Friday evening.
"We had a great opportunity to play two outstanding teams this weekend," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "We got off to a good start tonight and had a good offensive flow. We had some nice opportunities at the beginning, but weren't able to score. After they scored on us off an excellent shot, we just kept battling and battling. We knew it would take just one shot to tie it up. I was really proud of the girls for battling back and not giving up."
Washington State found the back of the net first, scoring in the 42nd minute. Carly Dobratz took a corner kick for the Cougars, sending the ball to Anna Miller. Miller tapped the ball over to Angela Fajardo, who collected the pass and sent the ball into the right side of the net from 17 yards out.
BYU frantically tried to even the score during the second period, but kept coming up short until the 87:31 mark when Kelsea Kakadelas flipped the ball up field to Katie Fellows on a breakaway. Fellows snatched the ball from 10 yards out and placed it passed the goalie.
Both teams had opportunities during the two overtime periods, but neither team was able to connect.
BYU outshot Washington State 18-10 with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Keeper Erika Woodbury collected four saves.
The Cougars return home Monday to face the University of Arizona at South Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m., and the game will be televised live on BYUTV.
