Fresno State hands BYU first loss
Provo, Utah (September 9, 2006)--After a thrilling 3-2 victory in front of a record crowd on Friday night the Cougars (4-1-0) suffered a 1-0 loss to the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-1-0) on a rainy and wet Saturday night.
"I think Fresno State came out and outworked us in the beginning," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. " We had our chances we just needed to have someone step up and put it in."
In the first half the Cougars out shot the Bulldogs 11-2, but of those two shots the Bulldogs made good on one of them with 21 minutes left in the half. Cougar goalie Erika Woodbury misjudged a ball that she came out for leaving an open net for Bulldog forward Courtney Sobrebo to put in the goal.
Shortly thereafter, with 18 minutes left to play in the half Cougar forward Alyssa Vander Veur had an opportunity to tie up the game with a shot from 15 yards out that went straight to the Bulldog goalie.
In the second half BYU continued to get good looks at the goal, but were not able to put any in. The Cougars had 10 corner kick opportunities in the second half, but were not able to convert on any.
The last real Cougar threat came with 3 minutes left in the game when forward Bobbi Tillotson had an open shot from the just 18 yards out that sailed over the net.
Despite the loss the Cougars take away some positives from the game including the play of defender Jessica Harmon and midfielder Natalie Nate, who both played solid for BYU.
"Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way," said Nate. "We didn't get a lot of crosses or take advantage of our possessions."
Coach Rockwood feels that the goal was a bad mistake, but that this is a learning experience for the team.
"Our girls fought hard and played well," said Rockwood. "All of this is a good experience. We just have to move on and look ahead."
The Cougars now start a four-game road trip starting at Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m.
