PROVO -- No. 23 BYU (1-0-0) began its season with a 1-0 win over Weber State (0-1-0), the team that ended the Cougars campaign last year in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. After an hour and a half delay due to lightning, the game got under way.

"You can't control the weather and some of the things that happened tonight," head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "A win is a win. It's good to get the first one out of the way."

In the early going neither team was able to find any kind of rhythm. The Cougars thought they had the first goal of the season in the 34th minute when midfielder Katie Fellows headed a ball into the back of the net, but the goal was waved off for colliding with Wildcat goalie Rebecca Ritchie.

The Cougars didn't have to wait long to get that first goal when thirty seconds later senior Alyssa Vander Veur found the back of the net to put BYU up 1-0.

"My teammates found me at the right place at the right time," said Vander Veur. "We wanted the win pretty bad and start our season off right."

I the second half, the Cougar defense maintained their composure and not only kept Weber State out of the net, but didn't allow a shot on goal in the second half.

In the 72nd minute the Wildcats were threatening when forward Linsey McFarland had a break away and Cougar goalkeeper Erika Woodbury made a sliding save to take away the scoring opportunity help preserve the shutout.

The Cougars were given a boost by the play of their bench led by Vander Veur, Fellows and sweeper Jessica Harmon. BYU recorded the only goal shortly after these three subs entered the game.

The game consisted of two lightning delays and the stadium lights went out for ten minutes in the 84th minute. The game was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and did not end until 11 p.m.

"Tonight's game was a battle," said Rockwood. "I've never experienced a game like this before with all these delays."

Up next the Cougars will host the Idaho State Bengals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the South Stadium field.
