SDSU Blanks Cougars

Las Vegas, Nev. (Nov. 2, 2005)--Although the No. 14 Cougars outshot San Diego State Wednesday evening in Las Vegas, the Aztecs played one of their best games this season, upsetting BYU, 2-0.

"We're disappointed with our performance," head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "San Diego State played harder, hustled more than us, and wanted it more."

SDSU got on the board in the 30th minute when Erika Sutton found herself six yards in front of the BYU goal with three Cougar players scrambling for the ball. Sutton turned around and saw the net at point-blank range. BYU keeper Erika Woodbury came out to make the save, but Sutton tapped the ball in just past Woodbury's outstretched hand. The goal marked Sutton's fifth of the season, becoming only the eighth goal scored on BYU this season and fourth during conference play.

The Cougars came out with undaunted determination in their eyes, earning several solid looks early in the second half, including a rocket from Bobbi Tillotson that hit the top of the cross bar and bounced out. SDSU goalkeeper Cat Burson played extremely tough, making several excellent saves, four on the game, to keep the Aztecs on top.

The Aztecs widened their lead with a goal by Lisa Nielsen in the 65th minute. Nielsen received a cross from Sutton and fired a shot from eight yards out into the back of the net.

BYU now sets its sight on the NCAA and an at-large bid from the tournament selection committee. The first-round of the tournament will be played on Nov. 10.

"We hope we still receive a bid to the NCAA tournament," Rockwood said. "We need to start over, regroup and refocus. We lost our focus during conference because of our success before conference."
