PROVO -- In front of 3,322 fans, the largest in BYU history, the Cougars (6-0-0) earned the sole goal of the game on their way to a 1-0 victory over No. 22 Texas (2-2-1) Monday at South Stadium.

Ready for a little Monday night football?

The BYU crowd that rushed the field at the end of the game sure was.

"This crowd was unbelievable," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I was so proud of our team tonight. The players on the field did everything we asked them to do. Overall it was a huge team effort and a big win for us."

After coming off a 0-0 overtime tie against Michigan State last weekend, Texas looked to regain momentum against the Cougars, but BYU had its own ideas, out shooting the Longhorns 8-3 in the first half, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.

In a game where both teams played with an extra sense of urgency, the Cougars had opportunities early. Carolyn Swenson outran two defenders minutes into the game to get a good look on goal, but the shot barely missed the crossbar. Moments later Katie Larkin also had a look as she showed fancy footwork during her run to the goal. Her shot missed wide.

Seniors are expected to step up and make the big shot. That's exactly how Jaime Rendich Beck responded.

Beck connected in the 19th minute for the only goal of the game. Bobbi Tillotson took a corner kick and lobbed the ball over to the far post. In a strikingly similar image of last Friday's game, Beck headed the ball in for her fourth goal of the season.

"I had a general idea of where the ball was going," said Beck. "I just had to get there and get my head on it. Thankfully I did."

The second half presented good looks for the Cougars, who couldn't quite find the back of the net. Larkin had one moment in particular that was almost textbook perfect. Larkin drove down the left side of the field, splitting two defenders, leaving the goal wide open--a moment of ear-splitting excitement. Her shot was barley an inch too far left.

Texas gave BYU a scare in the sixth minute when Priscilla Fite had a deadly look at the goal, but her shot hit the sidebar. Laura Mann recovered the ball and her attempt soared over the crossbar.

The victory marked the Cougars first victory against a ranked opponent since 2003 when BYU beat Colorado 2-0, in the NCAA tournament, on their way to the school's first elite eight appearance.

This weekend the Cougars head to Madison, Wisc. to play the University of Wisconsin and Colgate in the Wisconsin Big Toe Invitational. Game times are slated for 7 p.m. (CT) on Friday, and 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
