Lui Gets Game-Winning Goal In Home Town
WAIPAHU, HI -- (Aug. 29, 2005) Charlene Lui scored the game-winning goal with 33 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift BYU to a 1-0 win over Hawai`i in the championship match of the OHANA Hotels & Resort No Ka Oi at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie for more than 109 minutes of soccer action before senior midfielder/defender Charlene Lui found some open space and kicked the ball from 35 yards out for the game-winning goal. The Honolulu native was named tournament MVP. Teammates Katie Larkin, Natalie Nate, Claire Thomas, Jaime Beck and Carolyn Swenson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
BYU controlled much of the game and held a 24-9 shot advantage. In the second half the Cougars continued their offensive pressure out shooting the Rainbow Wahine 12-2 and tallying six corner kicks in the first 10 minutes.
With the win, BYU improves to 2-0 on the season and returns home to host Weber State on Fri., Sept. 2. Kick off from South Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
