CHENEY -- With the conference season set to begin next week, BYU defeated Eastern Washington 1-0 Saturday at EWU Sports & Recreation Center, and returns home with increased confidence.

BYU (4-7-2) improved its play after a rough start in the first half and finished with 24 shots to the Eagles 10. The game's lone goal came for the Cougars in the 77th minute beginning with a throw-in by senior Krissa Reinbold. Reinbold threw the ball in to junior Jaime Rendich, who turned pass her defender and sent the ball down the line to sophomore Courtney Asay. A low cross towards the goal by Asay was shot just inside the right post by Rendich, for her fifth goal of the season.

BYU's defense, which has steadily improved all season, recorded its third shutout, and held the Eagles offense without a shot in the secound half. EWU drops to 3-6-1 on the season. Goalie Erika Woodbury finished with two saves and won her fourth game for the Cougars.

"It felt really good to get this win," Rendich said. "Offensively, we've been struggling a little bit but I think that will change. This game kind of stopped that drought, and everyone's pumped up and ready for conference."

Coach Jennifer Rockwood believes that BYU, despite its losing record, has played some tough teams early on and now has a chance to turn things around in time to begin conference play.

"We now get to re-start our season," Rockwood said. "We've played some great teams and we've been in every one of those games with a chance to win. I believe that we're capable of winning the rest of our games and that is our goal."

The Mountain West Conference season kicks off for BYU beginning with two games at home. Next up for the Cougars is San Diego State Thursday Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and UNLV Saturday Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Saturday night's game is Senior Night at South Stadium.
