Road Trip Ends in Loss to No. 6 Portland
Facing the No. 6 ranked Portland Pilots, BYU played well despite losing 2-0 Friday afternoon in Pullman, WA at Lower Soccer Field.
BYU (3-7-2) had some great looks to score early but were unable to find the back of the net. The best opportunity in the first half came for the Cougars from sophomore Annie Zwahlen's open look with a header off a corner kick, but Portland goalkeeper Cori Alexander was there to make the stop.
Total shots ended in Portland's favor 16-10, after a closer 7-6 advantage at halftime. The opportunities came for BYU including a 5-3 advantage with corner kicks, but the Cougars were unable to convert. Junior Jaime Rendich gave BYU a chance to get on the board on a scramble alone infront of the goal, but pulled the ball just wide left.
The high-powered Portland offense was led by All-Americans Christine Sinclair and Lindsey Huie, who each scored a goal in the first half. Portland (9-2-0) when up 1-0 in the 24th minute when Huie scored her sixth goal of the season.
Sinclair gathered her own rebound in the 44th minute and finished to put the Pilots on top 2-0 going into intermission with her team-leading 12th goal.
"Despite the loss, the team is definitely improving; the girls are connecting better and we are beginning to look like the BYU teams of old," said assistant coach Chris Watkins. "We played really well on our defense, we just haven't been finishing."
Freshman goalie Erika Woodburry was active throughout the game for the Cougars, stopping six Pilot shot attempts.
BYU remains in Washington and will play Saturday at 4 p.m. (MST) against Eastern Washington (3-5-1) in Cheney. at the EWU Sports & Recreation Center.
