BYU Ties Hawaii after Double Overtime

The most physical contest for the Cougars up to this point in the season ended in a 0-0 tie with Hawaii after double overtime Monday at South Stadium.

BYU came out and controlled the tempo with crisp passing in the game's first 15 minutes. Both teams became increasingly more aggressive as the half wore on, resulting in multiple fouls for each squad. The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine finished the first half strong, testing BYU's defense with two great shots on goal. With 7:47 left in the half, forward Natasha Kai drew BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury out of the box on a breakaway. Kai chipped the ball over Woodbury aiming for the far corner of the goal, but the ball passed over the crossbar. Another Hawaii run came up empty with 5:08 remaining when midfielder Joelle Sugai took a shot from 35 yards out that sailed over the goal and out of bounds.

Beginning the second half, junior Jaime Rendich had more opportunities to score with her first in the 27th minute on a shot that was stopped by Hawaii goalkeeper Mahie Atay. The game grew more intense with 12 minutes remaining after a close Cougar drive. Sophomore Bobbi Tillotson drove to the far corner and crossed the ball to a diving Rendich who headed the ball, but Atay was there again to make the stop. At the end of regulation, BYU had the shot advantage over Hawaii 10-6.

The Cougars came out hungry in the first overtime with consecutive shots by sophomore Annie Zwahlen, Rendich and Zwahlen again, but Atay was there each time to keep the game alive for Hawaii. BYU's Woodbury had a game-saving dive to break up a Hawaii cross late in the first overtime.

Fatigue set in on two teams that have played multiple games in the last week, and after double overtime, the score remained 0-0.

"I think we had some great opportunities tonight, but we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "But we'll stay positive and keep pushing through this."

"I think we were in every game [during the homestand] but our shots just weren't falling," Rockwood said. "I really believe in this team and I believe we can put it together in the next few games."

BYU's record goes to 3-6-2 and completes a three-game homestand. Hawaii goes to 7-2-2 on the season. Next up for the Cougars is #5 Portland. The game will be played Friday Oct. 1 @ Washington State University in Pullman, WA at 12 p.m. (PST). BYU plays again Saturday Oct. 2 against Eastern Washington in Cheney, WA at 3 p.m. (PST).
