After dropping its first two games, the BYU women's soccer team defeated Northwestern in overtime Thursday night at South Stadium in front of 1,671 fans.

The goal came with 4:15 seconds left in overtime when sophomore Annie Zwahlen headed the ball past Northwestern goalkeeper on a corner kick by sophomore Bobbi Tillotson. The assist was Tillotsons' second of the game.

"I thought we played fantastic tonight," said BYU women's head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Jaime Rendich was phenomenal, Erika Woodbury played fantastic in the goal for us, and overall, the team played much better."

Ending the first half tied 0-0, both teams came out after halftime with more intensity. Just 30 seconds into the second half, Tillotson connected with Rendich on a corner kick to put the Cougars up 1-0, igniting the audience. Multiple chances were had by both teams and the game was tied up in the 16th minute by Northwestern forward Kelsey Hans, when she placed the ball just over the outstretched arms of a diving Woodbury. BYU surged ahead once again leading 2-1 after a goal by Tillotson, assisted by Rendich. The last goal of regulation came with just four minutes remaining with another perfectly placed shot in the top right corner of the goal by Northwestern forward Tabiha Lowey.

Northwestern drops to 1-2 on the season while BYU improves to 1-2 and faces No. 20 Arizona State Saturday at 5 p.m. at South Stadium.

"Hopefully this is a big confidence booster for Jaime and for the whole team," Rockwood said. "ASU is a very athletic team with a lot of speed, so we definitely have our hands full on Saturday."

The Cougars played a more controlled game Thursday, and came together at critical times. The defensive group of Claire Thomas, Rachelle Dixon, and a combination of Alison Haymond and Haylee Cuthbert are beginning to play well together, and will continue to improve as the season rolls on. Freshman goalkeeper Erika Woodbury started her second game in a row and finished with 4 saves on the evening.
