Kansas Spoils Home Opener

BYU women's soccer team debuted at home on the first day of school against the No. 11 Kansas Jayhawks, and fell short 1-0.

With the temperature close to 90 degrees at kickoff, both teams played hard despite the heat in a rare mid-afternoon game. BYU played aggressive and maintained a strong presence on the Kansas half throughout the game with flashes of young talent.

BYU drops to 0-2 after losing to Idaho State 3-1 in their season opener last Saturday. The Jayhawks improved to 2-0, after opening the season with a victory over UNLV.

"We knew that this season would be a learning process and as long as we take little steps at a time, we are going to get better," said BYU women's head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We played better this game, we just play a little panicked at times. We need to settle down and connect better, and that will come with more experience and composure."

Freshman goalkeeper Erika Woodbury started the first game of her collegiate career and finished with four saves, keeping the Cougars in the game with several defensive stops late in the game.

"Erika did a tremendous job in the goal for us," Rockwood said. "She kept us in the game with a lot of nice saves."

The only goal of the game came in the 29th minute when Kansas player Holly Gault scored on a pass by Nicole Cauzillo.

Kansas finished with ten shots on goal to BYU's eight.

The Cougars continue their five-game homestand with the next game being against Northwestern on Thursday, Sept. 2 in Provo at South Stadium Field. The game will start at 7 p.m. (MDT)
