Nebraska Ends BYU's Run In NCAA Tourney

Lincoln, Neb. (Nov. 17, 2001) Three goals by No.11 Nebraska put an end to BYU's 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup run, Saturday.

This was BYU's fifth consecutive appearance in post-season play. The Cougars finish the season with a 14-7-1, 5-1-0 record.

"I thought we played a brilliant game of soccer, the way soccer should be played," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We played our hearts out tonight, but obviously we're very disappointed in the outcome of the game," she said.

"I thought we did a great job in controlling the game, especially in the first half. We stayed in the game despite being down and I thought Jennie Christianson did an outstanding job and our defense played extremely well also," commented Rockwood.

The Cornhuskers Christine Latham put her team on the scoreboard first with a breakaway goal at the 36-minute mark to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead at half time. BYU outshot Nebraska 18 to 13 in the game and had a 12 to 4 advantage after the first 45 minutes of action.

Nebraska struck twice in the second half to seal the Huskers victory.

The Cornhuskers advance to the "Sweet Sixteen" in this year's NCAA Women's College Cup and will play the winner of tomorrow's Portland vs. Washington game.
