First MWC loss in 13 Games
Provo, Utah. (October 19, 2001) - In their MWC home opener of the 2001 season, No. 20 BYU lost to New Mexico 0-1, Friday in front over 1,000 fans. The loss drops BYU's record to 8-6-1, 2-1-0, and New Mexico improves to 3-8-2, 2-0-1.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half. New Mexico's Erchen Theys scored the lone goal two minutes into the second half. The Lobos played defense the rest of the contest. BYU's offense had several scoring opportunities outshooting New Mexico 28-5.
"It was an extremely disappointing game," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "To have 28 shots on goal and come away with a loss. We need to find someone who will step up and assume more leadership and get the job done."
The Cougars will face two more conference opponents at home next weekend, hosting Air Force on Thursday, Oct. 25 and Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 27. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
