No. 13 BYU shuts out No. 19 USC in Home Opener

PROVO -- On opening night of the 2001 women's college soccer season, the 13th ranked BYU women's soccer team defeated 19th ranked USC 2-0 on South Field in front of over 1,500 fans, Friday.

The first half was close until senior midfielder Sarah Higham Yee scored with only 3:29 left on the clock to give the Cougars some breathing room heading into the half. BYU played very aggressive defense led by goalie Jennifer Waldron who finished the night with seven saves.

Kelly Hunsberger sealed the victory with a put back off a beautiful shot by Rachelle Dixon eight minutes into the second half. The Trojans gave the Cougars a scare with some nice looks at the net late in the game, but Waldron and the BYU defense held on for the shutout.

"This was a big win for us and a great start to the season with the chance to get some of the gitters out of the players, " said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I was impressed with the solid play of our goalie, Jennifer Waldron as well as the performances of many of our freshman coming off the bench including Kim Devine and Krissa Campbell."

On Saturday, the 13th ranked Cougars are back in action against Tennessee with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff on South Field. - BYU -
