Seven High School Stars Sign to Play Soccer with the Cougars
PROVO, Utah - Five Utah high school soccer standouts are among seven athletes signing letters of intent to play college soccer at BYU beginning in September 1999.
Rachelle Dixon, a defender from Bountiful and Farrah Hofheins another top defender form Alpine top the local list.
Kelly Hunsberger from Provo, Aydre Soffe, from Salt Lake City and Jeni Williardson from Murray, Utah will play on the Cougars offensive side in the midfield and forward positions.
Rounding out the seven signees are two goalkeepers. Jenny Campbell from Boise, Idaho and Kylee Dickson from Gig Harbor, Washington.
Dixon plays at Bountiful High School where she was a First Team All-State Player in 1998 in soccer and the state's High School Champions in 1996. She's been a member of Utah ODP for the past three years, plays on the club team Devastation since 1994 and was the 1996 Female Athlete of the Year at Bountiful High School. Dixon has also lettered in basketball and track.
Hofheins, a senior at Lone Peak High School in Alpine is also a First Team All-State Player in 1997 and 98, was the 4A leading scorer in 1997, two-time team captain, member of the Utah OPD for three years beginning in 1996 and on last year's Region IV ODP. Hofheins was on the U-17 National Team Pool in 1998 and plays on the club team Firebirds.
Midfielder Kelly Hunsberger, from Provo was Timpview's leading scorer from 1996-1998, a member of Utah's ODP since 1996, a two-time First Team All-State Player, team captain in 1997 and 1998, and a member of the Region IV ODP Team in 1998.
Soffe, a forward at Skyline High School, is a First Team All-State Player in 1998, a member of Utah's ODP in 1996 and 1997, plays on the club team Soccer International, and were State Cup Champions in 1998.
Williardson, who will play a forward position on the BYU team, is Murray High School's all -time leading scorer, a member of Utah's ODP for the past four years, a First Team All-State Player in 1998, on Region IV ODP Team in 1997, 98 and a member of the club team Starz Extreme.
The two goalkeepers signing letters of intent with the Cougars' women's soccer program are from Idaho and Washington. Campbell plays at Boise High School and is a two-time All-State goalkeeper, high school state champions in 1997 and 1998, was the MVP in the 1996 State Cup, is the keeper for the Boise Capitol Soccer Club and has lettered in basketball.
Dickson, a senior goalkeeper at Gig Harbor High School, has been a two-time All-League High School Selection, plays for the F.C. Royals 1997 Region IV Champions, and was on the State Cup Champions Team in 1996, 97 and 98 and she has also lettered in basketball.
All seven athletes will play key roles in BYU's women's soccer program that has made two consecutive appearances to the NCAA Championships.
