BYU Pulls Out Overtime Victory

FULLERTON -- The BYU women's soccer team salvaged a weekend trip to the West Coast, beating Cal-State Fullerton in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Following Friday's controversial loss to ninth-ranked USC, the 11th ranked Cougars bounced back to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Titans on a goal by Jeni Williardson just over two minutes into overtime.

The Cougars recorded 27 shots in the game, but just seven shots on goal. The teams were deadlocked with a scoreless tie at halftime before Sarah Reading scored for the Cougars in the second half.

"We outplayed both teams but had a hard time finding the net this weekend," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We're creating so many opportunities, but on any given day anything can happen."

"It's very frustrating," she said. "I'm very glad we came out of this one."

The Titans' lone goal came from Taryn Kupper, just one minute after Reading tallied her goal in the second half.

"They got one scoring opportunity in the second half, and they scored," Rockwood said. "They finally scored the only time on our end."

The Cougars held the Titans to just five shots in the game, and BYU goalie Jennifer Waldron had no saves. BYU improved its record to 7-1 with the win, while Cal-State Fullerton fell to 4-4.

BYU comes home next weekend to host Washington Friday and Pacific Saturday at South Field in Provo.
