BYU Upset by San Diego State
SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State continued its mastery over the BYU women's soccer team Saturday, beating the Cougars 2-0 to hand them their first conference loss of the season.
The Aztecs have not been kind to the Cougars, beating them in both of last season's meetings, including the WAC Championship game. The domination continued Saturday, as San Diego State remained unbeaten against BYU at home and upped its all-time record against the Cougars to 5-2.
The Cougars controlled the ball much of the game, allowing the Aztecs just five shots and three on goal, but San Diego State made the most of its opportunities. After playing through a scoreless first half, San Diego State scoring leader Lori LaCoursiere converted on a pass from Kaycee McElree. Less than two minutes later, Megan Mattes connected with a header to put the Aztecs up, 2-0. The Aztecs needed just three second half shots to grab the win.
BYU managed 13 shots in the game, but could not get the ball to fall into the net. The shot total was the Cougars' second-lowest of the season.
With the loss, BYU (14-3 overall) fell to 3-1 in conference play, breaking a string of three successive shutouts against conference rivals. San Diego State (10-5 overall) rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Utah Thursday to improve to 3-1 in Mountain West Conference competition.
The Cougars next host Wyoming Thursday and Air Force Saturday. Both games will begin at 6 p.m. at BYU's South Field.
