Cougar Soccer Team To Host South African National Team

Spring practice is almost over for BYU's women's soccer team who conclude play this Thursday hosting the South African Women's National Team.

Two games are slated for Thursday, April 20 with kick offs at 1 and 7 p.m., at South Field. Both games are free and open to the public.

The South African National Team participated in the 1995 and 1999 Women's World Cup. In 2000, the team already played a very tough Netherlands team, losing 2-0. Two of their current players have been invited to play in the United States for the Women's United Soccer Association, which is scheduled to begin soccer competition next year.

During the 2000 spring season, the Cougars compiled a 13-2 record in mini indoor soccer action. The team also beat UNLV 7-0 and Dixie College 9-0 and 10-1 in outdoor games.

"We're extremely excited and honored to have the South African National Team here and are looking forward to playing them," said Jennifer Rockwood, BYU's head coach. "The two games will conclude are spring season and will also help us prepare for our European Trip."

The BYU team is making its first ever foreign tour, traveling to Paris, France and London, England later this month. The Cougars are slated to play two games in Paris and two in London against the women's premier semi-professional club teams in both of those countries.
