Y Women's Soccer Team Drops Overtime Game Against Portland

Portland, OR (Sept. 12, 2000) It was not a happy homecoming for BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood as her women's soccer team fell 2-1 in overtime to the University of Portland, Monday.

MWC Player of the Week Michelle Peterson put the Cougars on the scoreboard first at the 40th minute with an unassisted goal near the post after beating Portland's goalkeeper Cheryl Loveless.

With just nine minutes in regulation, Portland's Betsy Barr equalized the game on a rebound shot from teammate Imani Dorsey. In the first overtime period, the Pilots Vanessa Talbott gets the game winning goal after a series of passes from teammates Erin Misaki and Emily Patterson.

"We totally outplayed them for the whole 90 minutes today, but unfortunately things didn't go our way," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I was very proud of the way our team played, we just couldn't put them away early like we should have," added Rockwood, a native of nearby Lake Oswego, Oregon.

The 18th ranked Cougars fall to 4-2-0 on the year while the 23rd ranked Pilots remain unbeaten at 6-0- 0 on the season.

BYU returns home to host San Diego on Friday night at 7 p.m., a game that can be seen live on KBYU-TV and on BYU-TV for those on the Dish Network.
