Cougar Women To Play Utah In Title Game At MWC Soccer Champs

Las Vegas, NV. (Nov. 3, 2000) The Cougars took the Air Force Falcons by storm in semifinal women's soccer action at this year's MWC Champs, as the 9th ranked BYU team defeated the Falcons 8-1, Friday.

BYU had a comfortable 5-0 advantage at the break after scoring four goals in a 10 minute span. Senior midfielder Kim Lowe put the Cougars on the scoreboard just 2 and a half minutes into the game after getting a pass from Natalyn Lewis. Then it was two goals from Sara Reading and one each from sisters Michelle Jensen Peterson and Janet Jensen for the 5-0 lead.

In the second half, the conference's Player of the Year, Michelle Peterson notched her second score of the game two minutes into the second half, picking up her 16th goal of the year.

Air Force's Beth Boyer scored the lone Falcon goal on a free kick from from 30 yards out to avoid the Cougar shutout with just seven minutes left in the contest.

"This was a great game, a total team effort," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "We had some great finishes and our midfielders did a great job for us."

The eight goals by BYU are a new MWC Championship record.

It will be an all Utah matchup at Saturday's final game between the number one seeded Cougars and the number two seeded Utes. Kick off is set for noon at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the UNLV campus. The Utes advanced to the final game by defeating San Diego State 2-1 in the other semifinal game. This is the third consecutive time BYU has played in the championship title game. In last year's final, the Cougars defeated homestanding SDSU 2-1 in overtime to capture the first-ever MWC Soccer crown. BYU holds a 8-0 advantage over Utah.
