Mozingo and Mason sweep WCC honors
SAN MATEO, Calif. — BYU women's soccer forward Brecken Mozingo was named West Coast Conference (WCC) Offensive Player of the Week, and goalkeeper Savanna Mason was named WCC Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
BYU faced No. 14 Portland in conference play last week, beating them 4-1 on South Field and handing the Pilots their first loss of the 2022 season. With the help of Mozingo on offense and Mason on defense, the Cougars improved to 2-0-2 in conference play and moved up seven spots in the RPI rankings to No. 19.
Notching a brace on the night, her second of the season, Mozingo furthered her goal tally to nine. She also grabbed an assist against Portland, earning her five points on the pitch. Coming into the match, Portland averaged almost two goals per game, while Mason only allowed one on Saturday night, tallying four saves to propel the Cougars to victory.
Mozingo leads the Cougars in goals (9), assists (8) and points (26) this season. Her eight assists is the highest in the WCC, while her 75 shots comes in second, right behind Santa Clara’s Izzy D’Aquila with 76. Mason has tallied 30 saves for a .682 save percentage and has four shutouts this season.
