BYU to host South Carolina in NCAA quarterfinal Saturday

PROVO, Utah — No. 4 seed BYU women's soccer will host South Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 27 at South Field in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for a spot in the College Cup.

Saturday’s matchup is scheduled for 5 p.m. MST on BYUtv, BYUtv.org and the BYUtv App. The game will also be carried live on the BYU Sports Network — BYU Cougars App and byucougars.com/liveradio.

BYU will host the Elite 8 round for only the second time in program history. 

LAST TIME ON THE FIELD. BYU took down the No. 1 seed Virginia 1-0, with the game-winning goal by senior forward Cameron Tucker in the 47th minute. BYU remains the highest seed in its region of the NCAA bracket, and looks to advance to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in program history.

THE GAMECOCKS. South Carolina is 14-6-1 on the season, coming off an impressive run with three straight shutouts as an unseeded team in the NCAA Tournament. South Carolina is one of only two teams (Michigan) who has not allowed a goal in the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks upset No. 2 seed North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, winning 1-0 with a goal by graduate forward Luciana Zullo in the 81st minute. In the second round, the Gamecocks shut out Hofstra 3-0. Most recently, South Carolina defeated Penn State 2-0 in Los Angeles, California in the third round of the tournament to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for its fifth time in program history. One of South Carolina’s key games during its regular season was winning 3-2 against No. 13 Auburn at home on Oct. 1. The Gamecocks were winning 3-0 at the 47 minute mark, and let Auburn score two goals in the second half. BYU lost to Auburn 2-1 on the road on Aug. 21 for its first loss of the season. The Gamecocks have been ranked as high as No. 12 in this year’s NCAA DI women’s soccer poll. 

COUGARS VS. GAMECOCKS. BYU and South Carolina have faced each other one time, with the Cougars falling 1-0 against the Gamecocks in the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016 at Stone Stadium.
